At Lake Oconee Youth Alliance, we believe every student deserves someone who believes in their potential. Through caring, one-on-one relationships, our mentors provide encouragement, guidance, and support that help students build confidence, overcome challenges, and pursue higher education.
Our mentors walk alongside students during some of the most important transitions in their lives—from exploring college opportunities and navigating the application process to adjusting to college life and working toward graduation. For many students, having a trusted mentor provides the encouragement and perspective they need to stay focused on their goals and realize what's possible.
Every LOYA scholarship recipient is paired with a dedicated mentor who serves as a coach, advocate, and trusted resource throughout their college journey. These relationships often extend far beyond the classroom, creating lasting connections that help students succeed academically, professionally, and personally.

Mentorship at Lake Oconee Youth Alliance is about far more than offering advice—it's about building meaningful, lasting relationships that help young people realize their full potential. Our mentors encourage, guide, and inspire students as they navigate important academic, personal, and career milestones. Mentoring can take many forms, from accompanying students on college visits and helping them navigate the college application process to providing career exploration opportunities, strengthening communication and life skills, assisting with creative writing, or simply being a trusted adult who listens, encourages, and believes in them.

One of the qualities that truly sets LOYA apart is our commitment to every scholarship recipient long after they receive their award. Each LOYA Scholar is paired with a dedicated volunteer mentor who remains by their side throughout their college or post-secondary journey. While financial assistance helps remove barriers to higher education, we know that scholarships alone are not enough. Students also need encouragement, practical guidance, accountability, and someone who will celebrate their successes and help them overcome challenges along the way.
This combination of financial support and sustained one-on-one mentoring is at the heart of the LOYA model—and it's making a measurable difference. Our scholars have achieved an impressive 93% college retention rate, a testament to the power of investing not only in a student's education, but in the student as a whole.
